1-3 Discussion: HIM and the Revenue Cycle

To begin this discussion, introduce yourself to your classmates and instructor. Briefly discuss your background, describe your professional goals, explain what you hope to gain from this course, and share what you enjoy doing in your free time.

Then, for this discussion, you will be assigned a segment of the revenue cycle from Figure 1.1 of the Revenue Cycle Management Best Practices textbook to examine in relation to HIM. The four segments are identify and intake patient, perform services, bill for services, and collect cash. To continue your initial post, respond to the following:

• How do HIM departments support your assigned segment of the revenue cycle? Explain the specific roles that HIM departments play.
• Why is your segment vital to the revenue cycle and the success of an organization?

Respond to peers who chose a segment different from your own assigned segment and suggest additional reasons why the segment is important to an organization’s success. How does your assigned segment impact your peers’ segments with respect to the revenue cycle?
