What is Ageism?
Ageism is also known as age discrimination and age prejudice. The sociological definition of ageism is discrimination or prejudice against an individual or group because of their age. Ageism, in other words, means unequal and unfair treatment against someone or something because of their age. Because of age, an individual is not allowed to increase their performance or acquire a form of mobility to achieve the social ladder. In addition, stereotypes and attitudes of one’s age prevents people from accurately assessing and responding criteria’s which fall outside of social expectations. While ageism may be causal or systematic, it is necessary to distinguish the set of beliefs, attitudes, and norms that are subjective and undermining social arrangements by physical identities.
Examples of ageism can include the following:

-Not hiring young individuals because an employer thinks they are immature based on age regardless of personality and experience.
-Disregarding or speaking over the elderly due to the notion that their opinions have no value.
-Constant regard to ID checking because young individuals are perceived as children and prejudiced based on their looks rather than proper age.

Ageism and inequality are often explored on older people who are perceived to lack experience in social domains, henceforth making them experience inequality in social, economic and political institutions. For example, older people are perceived to be independent and no longer capable. Therefore, they are denied livelihood opportunities. Similarly, older people living with disabilities experience and as their age is intensified, they become vulnerable to abuse and violation of personal rights. These areas of inequality are reinforced as ones have shorter life expectancy and suffer more discrimination because their livelihoods are exacerbated causing greater disadvantaged onto their identities and social arrangements.
