From time to time as you may have noticed, I would like to share a

meaningful scripture here in class. I think considering scripture is really important not only in context of our spiritual lives, but believe it or not, also in context of sociology!
So after discussing socialization and how society influences us as groups and individuals last week and taking a look at social stratification and social mobility this week, I am reminded of two scriptures: Job 42:1-2 “Then Job replied to the Lord: “I know that you can do ll things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted.” and Jeremiah 32:17 ” “Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.”
We live in a world with social structures and institutions, stratified groups and demographics, and many areas of our society that can pigeon-hole us into one reality. Social structures and social pressures can cause us great stress and strain as we navigate through sometimes difficult aspects of our lives, often while trying to achieve upward social mobility. What is also true for those of us who identify as Christian is that we also serve an Almighty God through whom we can do nything and everything He has for us.
I encourage you to think about these and other scriptures this week. As you learn more about sociology and how we study different topics in sociology, what is the intersection of our social scientific world and our spiritual world in your opinion? Are they in conflict for you? Do they work together in harmony? Is there a way that you personally connect your faith and your lived experience in society? Are there other scriptures or quotes that you think apply to this exploration of how our spiritual lives intersect with what we are learning about society?
