THE QUESTION (Parts A, B, and C): Kevin Reilly raises some important issues with respect to the idea and practice of “nationalism” that emerges in the 19th century.  He shows how  “nationalism” was  used by many Western and Western-European nations and peoples as they embarked on imperial campaigns to colonize the non-Western peoples.  Yet he also shows how “nationalism” was also later used by these same non-Western peoples to later “free” themselves from Western imperialism.  Reilly discusses the complicated relationship that existed between 19th and 20th century nationalist liberation/anti-colonial movements and the social and economic system communism. In some cases, nationalist liberation/anti-colonial movements did not seek to create a communist social and economic system.  While in other cases, they did as a way of challenging global capitalism.   Based on your reading of Reilly, answer the following questions: Part A) What is Reilly’s perspective on the use of “nationalism” as both an idea and practice of both subjugation/colonization and liberation/anti-colonialism?  Discuss one example as presented by Reilly. Part B) How does Reilly characterize the complicated relationship between between nationalist liberation/anti-colonial movements and the social and economic system communism?  Discuss one example as presented by Reilly. Part C) What is your opinion of Reilly’s characterization? Why?  Please elaborate. 0 0
