(Please note, this has nothing to do with choosing a name or other processes such as determining sex. I’m asking for the actual problems faced in trying to determine what species the fossil represents. Imagine you have found fossilized remains and you need to determine to what species it belongs – if it is the same species as something that has already been discovered or something new. There are several issues that come into play that the text discusses. I am looking for an explanation of those issues. These have nothing to do with what sex it is, how old it was when it died, etc but the actual theoretical issues that come into play)
