I. The paper Your term paper will be 2,500 words in length, approximately 8-10 pages. This is a minimum range for your paper. There is no upper limit. If you have time, and enjoy your subject, feel free to go on at greater length. Your final grade on the paper will be determined by quality, and by meeting the minimums I set out here. II. Primary sources Your paper will utilize at least two primary sources. Make sure when you are thinking of topics that you can find sources for what you wish to write about. This is why topics are approved by me well before the final papers are due. If you have trouble finding sources, I can help point you in the right direction. A primary source is an artifact, usually a document or text, which was created by someone who lived at the time in question. This does not necessarily mean an eyewitness, but usually it does. A diary written by an ex-slave who survived the Middle Passage is a primary source. So is a book or article written about the ex-slave by someone who interviewed her. Not all primary sources are textual. For purposes of talking about the worldview of medieval Muslim traders, an old map can be a primary source. It can show how they thought, what areas they knew well, and how detailed their geographic knowledge was. In general, if you have a source, and are not certain if it is a primary source, ask me. III. Citations You must cite your sources. Historians use a modified version of MLA format called “Turabian” or “Chicago style”. In that style, footnotes are at the bottom of the page, with a superscript number to refer you to the note.
