When the topics of nursing diagnosis and medical diagnosis are discussed, opposing viewpoints emerge. Medical diagnostics are based on the pathology of an injury or illness, as well as a remedy or method of treatment. The nursing diagnosis, which supports the medical diagnosis, is based on actions within the nurse’s area of expertise that she can perform on her own. A medical diagnostic is used to determine the cause of an illness or other health problem. A nursing diagnosis is concerned with a person’s reaction to actual or potential health problems and life processes (Nanda, n.d.).
Pneumonia is a medical diagnosis; some nursing diagnoses for pneumonia include impaired gas exchange, activity intolerance, changes in ADLs, and ineffective airway clearance, to name a few. The medical diagnosis focuses on invasive treatment measures that necessitate a high level of care in order to cure the illness or repair the injury. Because the ability to tolerate an activity can be a precursor to gaining the ability to perform activities of daily living, the nursing diagnosis supplements the medical diagnosis. Medical and nursing diagnoses are symbiotic, because in any patient care treatment scenario, nurses and physicians must collaborate to care for those in need. Nurses use evidence-based practice (EBP) to provide safe, high-quality care to patients and to improve outcomes. When developing EBP, one considers previous research (Helbig, 2018). The PICOT question must be used because it supports and provides relevance and validity for the care that will be provided.
Evidence-based practice is a conscientious, problem-solving approach to clinical practice that incorporates the best evidence from well-designed studies, patient values and preferences, and a clinician’s expertise in making clinical care decisions (Nurse.com,2022).
Nurses use EBP to provide safe, high-quality care to patients and to improve outcomes. When developing EBP, one considers previous research (Helbig,2018). It is critical that your PICOT is based on a nursing practice problem in order to provide quality patient care and improve patient outcomes.
A nursing practice practice problem is one that involves patient care, such as support, comfort, trauma prevention, any procedure, nursing intervention, recovery promotion, assessment, health screening, health education, and health care coordination. A medical practice problem is concerned with a medical condition or disease, whereas an example of using PICOT for evidence-based practice in a patient with sepsis and reduced level of consciousness would be studying the frequency of two hourly repositioning to prevent pressure ulcers. It identifies a condition, looks for causes, establishes a prognosis, and prescribes a treatment (Chiffi & Zanotti ,2015). One example of a medical practice problem is the administration of antibiotics to bedridden patients in order to destroy the causative organism.
