Stakeholder Barriers

Currently, most healthcare institutions recognize evidence-based practice (EBP) as an integral component in the delivery of patient care (Joseph, 2019). EBP has been associated with enhancing the quality of patient care, improved patient and family satisfaction, enhanced organizational performance, and reduced cost. My EBP project focuses on the use of fall-tailored interventions for patient safety in reducing falls in the medical-surgical ward. For effective implementation of this EBP, it is necessary to assess potential stakeholder barriers to come up with appropriate mitigating strategies.

Some of the potential stakeholder barriers at the individual professional level include the individual’s perception, attitude, practice, and knowledge related to EBP (Mathieson et al., 2018). For instance, when the stakeholders have not been adequately educated about the proposed EBP intervention, they will tend to have a negative perception and attitude toward the change due to a lack of knowledge on how to implement the practice. organizational barriers may include a lack of adequate support for the implementation of the new practice and poor facilitation.

In order to avoid such barriers, it will be necessary to improve stakeholders’ involvement to gain support for the EBP implementation. The strategies to promote stakeholders’ engagement include, identifying the stakeholders early enough, educating them about the new intervention, allowing them to discuss with one another the new intervention, listening to their feedback, make them part of the implementation team by assigning active roles and finally evaluating their outcome (Bach-Mortensen et al., 2018). I would suggest to a colleague who is struggling with obtaining stakeholders’ support to apply the above-mentioned steps.
