The data is also useful to form new knowledge on how to promote better clinical practices that enhance patient care and have better patient outcomes.
In 2017, Kartal and Yazici claimed that the usage of information and communication technology has significantly enhanced the standard of care given to patients by nursing personnel. I can honestly say that the digital era has improved my personal effectiveness and efficiency in my line of work. I currently work in a telemetry unit, where the majority of the nursing decisions I make are affected by a combination of my prior knowledge and the information provided by the equipment in our unit. For instance, a patient receiving Betapace loading for atrial fibrillation needs to have laboratory testing and undergo ongoing monitoring during the course of the therapy. When a patient enters our unit, the software my hospital uses immediately delivers me medical directives, including the drug dose and frequency under a certain protocol. Even when a physician’s order is in place, as a professional nurse, my first course of action is to examine the patient utilizing the knowledge and abilities I’ve gained through years of experience. Based on the knowledge they get from using equipment, performing nursing procedures, interacting with others, and having the capacity to analyze obtained data, nurses make clinical decisions (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018).
One piece of medical equipment I use in this case to further assess the patient is the vital sign machine, which provides me with data on a patient’s blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, and temperature. Another important piece of equipment I use for Betapace loading is a continuous heart monitor, which allows me to see a more complete picture of the patient’s cardiac rhythm and alerts me if the protocol ordered is appropriate for the patient. To avoid a cardiac arrest or torsade de pointes, the procedure also instructs me to check the patient’s potassium and magnesium levels before administering the first dose of the medication. When the electrolytes are out of range, the computer initiates a task to either replace the drug with the electrolyte, postpone taking the medication, or contact the doctor for further instructions. Based on the information provided, my knowledge, and my skills, I can plan my next steps as a nurse, guiding me to practice safely and effectively address patients’ conditions.

With current nursing shortages, telenursing is becoming more popular. Telenursing is the practice of providing nursing care to patients in remote locations by using computers, phones, the internet, digital monitoring equipment, and other technologies. “Telehealth is an important consumer health application because it allows consumers to remain in their homes for care, but it still faces barriers such as professional licensure, legislative issues, reimbursement, a lack of supportive infrastructure, and storage and device protection” (Hebda, Hunter & Czar, 2019, p.379). Because of the convenience it provides, many consumers are turning to telehealth nursing. Instead of going to the emergency room, patients can receive nursing care from the comfort of their own home. Telenursing is a viable option for people who require immediate medical advice but cannot physically get to a doctor’s office. There are some limitations to telehealth and telenursing, such as the Haight Act of 2008, which states that providers (i.e., doctors and nurse practitioners) cannot prescribe controlled substances to patients who have not been physically examined in person. Nurses are not permitted to provide teleheath services to patients who live outside of the state(s) in which they are licensed. Nurses must still follow patient privacy policies such as HIPPA laws, which requires them to work in a professional setting and use fully encrypted web-based systems to transmit patient information (Govtrack, n.d.).
I believe that telenursing has had a positive impact on our nursing careers because it allows us to provide care to patients in remote locations who may not have access to medical professionals in their area. According to one article “Many home care agencies are looking for innovative ways to care for a large number of patients in order to meet the needs of the patients and to relieve the additional burden on nursing due to the current nursing shortage. Telehealth technology increases nurse productivity by reducing travel time to remote areas, resulting in an increase in average daily census. New time-saving and patient-safety initiatives are critical, especially in rural areas where driving time to patients’ homes can consume the majority of a nurse’s day, leading to increased adoption of telehealth in home care ” (Hughes, 2008). This is just one more example of how nursing informatics can help you. As you’ve seen in your own practice, such technologies reduce communication delays, which can save lives in time-critical situations like the aforementioned stroke patient.
