Some of the website’s primary sections are mission, vision, leadership, organization, fundraising, jobs and careers, library, and diversity. The organization’s major purpose is to protect everyone against sickness and to help everyone overcome any new ailments. To protect people, the company also protects against acute or chronic illnesses in their early stages. Some of the organization’s key goals are as follows: Detection and response to newly emerging health threats; conducting research using cutting-edge technology and focusing primarily on disease prevention; focusing on people’s health and lowering the mortality rate in society; supporting monitoring of the health care system and the community; and promoting sound advice on safe health behaviors for the community and leadership development.

Describe whether the EBP is the foundation of the operations of this healthcare institution and, if not, why.

With a few exceptions noted in the paperwork, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention adheres to the fundamental practices and is based on evidence-based practice. Clinical expertise is prioritized in the implementation of evidence-based practice. Each individual customer, on the other hand, is polled for reliable observation lessons and accurate information. Culture, values, and priorities are determined by collaboration between clients and caregivers. The EBP is documented at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in accordance with scientific principles while taking into account community norms and preferences. The states may seek assistance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in developing questionnaires, developing specific data collection techniques, selecting samples of schools to be included in the review, or validating self-reported data from a school census (Mellerson et al., 2020).

Describe whether your opinion of the healthcare organization has changed as a result of the information you found on the website. Give specifics and illustrations.

Of course, yes—the information I obtained from this organization’s website has changed my perspective, because the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) caters to all medical needs, particularly those of the local population. Major topics included emergency treatment, pandemic diseases, population social welfare, health prevention, new research, environmental health, injury, violence, and so on. As a result of the healthcare organizations, I now see things differently. Using the current pandemic crisis as an example, conduct research into pandemic illness and make recommendations for prevention. Following a thorough review of the health organization’s emphasis on disease prevention and health promotion in a variety of methods, my perception shifted.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will be the health care organization under scrutiny (CDC). This healthcare organization provides excellent prevention services to the public. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is constantly working to control diseases and to guide people’s prevention care. This organization cares for the community 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with full support from new research on diseases and how they will be treated appropriately. Furthermore, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) safeguards many members of the community who are in need. Furthermore, it focuses on food safety, health and weight, overweight and obesity, tobacco and smoke, and the vaccination and immunization of individuals who are due and in need of these services.

EBP was not born on March 21, 2010, but it could be the date the approach “grew up” and left home to face the world.

The Affordable Care Act included a requirement for empirical evidence when it was passed. EBP research has grown significantly. The use of EBP has spread to allied health professions, education, healthcare technology, and other fields. EBP has begun to be adopted and promoted by health organizations.

This adoption will be discussed in this Discussion. You will examine the websites of healthcare organizations and determine how much EBP is used by these organizations.

Various health care professionals around the world are aware that evidence-based practice (EBP) improves healthcare quality, reliability, and patient outcomes while decreasing care and cost (Melkyn et al., 2014). EBP is instilled early in our educational careers in the nursing field, and we are frequently encouraged to cite or use the most recent evidence-based practices for care. It is because of this commitment that the nursing profession has been a pioneer in catalyzing the adoption of EBP and using it as a standard of excellence (Stevens, 2013). However, EBP affects not only nursing care but also health organizations as a whole. Niklaus Children’s Hospital has a detailed section on nursing publications and innovations that details the hospital’s use of EBP. For example, Miami Children’s encourages nurses to initiate or use Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) protocols to independently process improvements to nursing care and nursing research across the organization.

To align with the Nursing Department’s commitment to providing high-quality care associated with positive patient outcomes, Niklaus Children’s Hospital integrates evidence-based best practices and nursing research into clinical and operational processes. As a result, EBP has a significant impact on how health care organizations distribute patient-centered care and what they expect from nursing professionals. Recognizing the significance of EBP at Niklaus Children’s Hospital has shifted my perception in a positive direction and reassured me that patient care adheres to the most recent standards and policies.

The health care organization that I have chosen to review, is one that I recently became a member of. The American Association for Nurse Practitioners (AANP) is an organization that aims to empower all NPs to advance quality health care through practice, education, advocacy, research, and leadership. (American Association of Nurse Practitioners, 2020)

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is defined by Duke University Medical Center, as the integration of clinical expertise, patient values, and the best research evidence into the decision-making process for patient care. (Duke University Medical Center Library and Archives, 2020) According to Melnyk (2018), EBP strategies allow NPs and other health care providers to translate research findings into clinical practice. (Melnyk, 2018) With the values that the AANP stands for, this organization’s work is grounded in EBP. Being a member of the AANP I receive updates via email and alerts covering the latest information and findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

I can not say that my findings one the AANP website has changed my perspective, because I researched the organizations prior to joining for the relevancy of information that would be provided pertaining to my future studies. I must express how happy I am having a membership with the AANP. I have access to many articles and scholarly journals with the latest EBP updates.

Globally various health care professionals are aware that evidence-based practice (EBP) improves healthcare quality, reliability, and patient outcomes and reduces care and cost (Melkyn et al., 2014). In the nursing field, EBP is instilled early on in our educational careers, and encouragements to continually cite or use the most current evidence-based practices for care are frequently provided. It is due to this dedication; that the profession of nursing has been a leader in catalyzing the adoption of EBP and using it as a marker of excellence(Stevens, 2013). However, EBP not only impacts nursing care but health organizations as a whole. Niklaus Children’s Hospital has a detailed section relating to nursing publications and innovations, which details the hospital’s reliance on EBP.

For instance, Miami Children’s encourages nurses to initiate or use Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) protocols to process improvements to nursing care and nursing research throughout the organization independently. Niklaus Children’s Hospital integrates evidence-based best practices and nursing research into clinical and operational processes to align with the Nursing Department’s commitment to provide high-quality care associated with positive patient outcomes. Therefore EBP plays a significant role in the health care organization’s distribution of patient-centered care and on their expectation of nursing professionals. Having discerned the importance of EBP to Niklaus Children Hospital has shifted my perception in a positive direction and reassured me that patient care is meeting the most up to date standards and policies.

While getting my undergraduate degree, I remember the emphasis of EBP particularly in the hospital setting. It was stressed to us the importance of prevention of hospital acquired infections. The Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) has an emphasis of EBP, especially in their publication of scope and practices. “This publication highlights the emerging roles of Medical-Surgical Nurses, including the promotion of exemplary nursing practice, scholarly activity with dissemination and implementation of evidence-based practice guidelines, and a commitment to promotion of continuing education for self and others.” (AMSN, n. d.) The AMSN offers membership but also certification as a Med-surg nurse. They base this certification heavily on EBP in the med-surg setting.

“The staff nurse is a critical link in bringing evidence ‐ based changes into clinical practice,” (Majid et al, 2011) therefore, I believe the med-surg nurse could play a vital role in EBP in the hospital setting. Med-surg is a “catch-all” sort of department in the hospital setting. Here is where I believe a nurse would see the most diverse type of care ranging from gastrointestinal to cardiac. I believe PICOT questions could be easily formed here due to the patient population. Since there is no shortage of hospitalized patients that go through a med-surg floor, especially in the ear of COVID-19, practitioners are able to “ask the burning clinical question in PICOT format.” (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019, p.17)

I did not know this organization existed prior to my research, so I did not have any perception to change. But I believe this organization is a productive one. They encourage med-surg nurses to pursue certification in their field and promote continuing education that includes EBP. I believe this organization could be empowering and supportive of the med-surg nurse.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more specifically its National Healthcare Safety Network, was the organization that I decided to investigate. This is a network that provides hospitals and other healthcare facilities with the ability to track data relating to a variety of different things; however, the majority of facilities utilize it to track hospital-acquired illnesses such as CAUTI, CLABSI, C.diff, and others (CDC, n.d.). Although NHSN does keep track of data, the primary focus of their work is on prevention. You can find the most recent evidence-based practices and recommendations for insertion bundles, daily care of lines, and a great deal of other contemporary standards of practice for doctors on their website. These recommendations have been demonstrated to be effective in preventing HAIs when they are followed.

Both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Health and Safety Network (NHSN) seem to adhere to the principles of evidence-based practice. On their websites, you may find links to the studies and research that they are relying on to inform the recommendations that they provide to the general public and to healthcare institutions. You’ll also notice that their suggestions have dates on which they were reviewed and modified, which is something else that I believe to be significant and which contributes to the fact that they are evidence-based. As the field of medicine advances and new evidence-based treatments emerge, the guidelines are continuously being assessed and expanded upon.

My impression of the CDC and NHSN hasn’t shifted much, if at all, in recent years. As a result of the fact that the company I work for has been utilizing their care bundles to reduce and prevent HAIs for some time now, I am familiar with the way in which they gather information and recommendations and then distribute them. We also frequently listen to the calls that are made by their Clinician Outreach and Communication Activity (COCA), which provide the most recent information on developing and ongoing dangers and emergencies to the public’s health. I believe that this has contributed to an increase in my level of trust in this organization as well. They definitely appear to be making an effort to ensure that people are aware of what is going on and are sharing any useful information that has been acquired (CDC, n.d.).

Evidence-based practice is critical to providing high-quality care and achieving favorable results for patients. It provides direction for how we practice medicine and guarantees that we are continually looking for the most effective treatment alternatives. It is an essential element in the pursuit of the quadruple aim, which includes improving the health of the population (Sikka et al., 2015).

I am a fan of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) because they keep the public updated on the latest trends on health. The CDC works with other countries to try to detect, protect and respond to public health hazards by conducting medical research. Many countries are unprepared and ill-equipped to handle and control various health emergencies. The world is unpredictable with natural disasters, emerging infectious disease outbreaks, and unintentional or intentional releases of highly lethal pathogens. “The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) works with countries and partners to build and strengthen global health security preparedness so they can quickly respond to public health crises” (Tappero, et al, 2017). Because of their ongoing research and laboratories spread all over the United States they can quickly respond to public health crises. “The CDC laboratory testing works hard so they can enable early detection of public health threats before they escalate into outbreaks and threaten communities, nations, and the world” (Fitzmaurice, et al. 2017).

Initial Discussion – Week 1

Incorporating evidence-based practice (EBP) in healthcare appears to have endless benefits when working toward positive patient outcomes and quality healthcare. EBP provides clinicians the process and tools to translate external evidence into clinical practice (Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt, 2018). For this discussion, I will review The American Nurses Association (ANA) and discover where, if at all, the evidence-based practice appears, whether the ANA’s work is grounded in EBP and whether any information found on the ANA changed my perception of them.

Evidence-based practice is present within the organization and appears to be incorporated as one of the central ideals of the American Nurses Association. The ANA explains the meaning and importance of an evidence-based teaching/learning model within their website. Certifications and Courses offered through the ANA are all created around the common practice that has led to the most positive patient outcomes and minimal complications as supported by extensive evidence. Furthermore, there are hundreds of articles within their website written on evidence-based practice of varying healthcare illnesses and treatments (American Nurses Association et al., 2022).

The American Nurses Associations’ work appears well-grounded in EBP, with the main foundation of information being supported by widespread evidence. The definition of evidence-based practice within the nursing profession has evolved from being strictly clinically based to incorporating a more holistic approach that reflects the entirety of nursing research and practice (Mackey and Bassendowski, 2017).

Considering the information I reviewed on the American Nurses Association, my perception changed positively. At my place of employment, we strive to provide evidence-based care because it genuinely does allow patients the best chance of overcoming whatever ailment they are encountered with. I would say I further respect the work that the ANA puts into their organization because being a healthcare professional is difficult, but wearing the hat of a researcher as well, and successfully, is no small accomplishment. It also brings effective and accurate research and practices to its members, further spreading education regarding the importance of utilizing evidence-based practices.

RE: Initial Discussion – Week 1

Hey Cassandra, great discussion post, I enjoyed reading it. It is very imperative to incorporate EBP in the work we do with our patients. According to (Melnyk et al, 2010) EBP is also essential in providing our patients with the most optimal outcome because it has been researched and proven that EBP yields improved quality of care, However, there still are challenges and inconsistency in routinely implementing EBP even though in the past coming years it has been coined that golden standard in nursing care. The Center of EBP has educational nursing classes specifically foe EBP called the EBP Nurse Scholars, the course entails the promotion of cultural changes through practice and theory of EBP (Crabtree et al, 2016). EBP in the medical field has come a long way, but it still evident that there are still some room to continue to improve, implement and disseminate EBP. Again, great postost Cassandra!
