Analyzing Textual Evidence

Given:  1. Inner conflict between filial piety and chastity in Confucianism is shown by Kieu selling herself to concubinage but it was hoax marriage and the husband sold her into prostitution.  2. at the time when Kim and Vuong tells her about meaning of chastity. (the textual evidence below), Kieu had reached enlightenment. Analyze below (like how I analyzed the block text evidence above) to show that the conflict between filial piety (loyalty) and chastity is resolved by Buddhist point of view (using the fact that the world is illusion, and Kieu reaching enlightenment realized this. -refer to expedient means) because it alleviates the chastity (which was in conflict with Neo Confucian values, see the given below) to a concept of mind instead of physical. ‘Old Vuong exclaimed:”Other times, other tides! even a saint must bow to circumstance. You worship gods and Buddhas – who’ll discharge a daughter’s duties, keep a lover’s vows?”(Tale of Kieu, 3051-3054) -Old Vurong to Kieu “You have your reasons- others have their own. Among those duties falling to her lot, a woman’s chastity means many things. For there are times of ease and times of stress: in crisis, must one rigid rule apply? True daughter, you upheld a woman’s role: what dust or dirt could ever sully you?” (Tale of Kieu, 3114-3120) -Kim(first lover) to Kieu while asking her to marry him after being reunited.
