Argument Viewpoints New York Times

https://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate As described in those instructions, you will need to choose a topic from the New York Times “Room for Debate” pages (https://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate) or from the NY Times “401 Prompts for Argumentative Writing. (Link here).  You will use the same topic throughout this unit.   For each topic there are links to a few opinion pieces on the topic.  Some topics have more links than others.  Read all of the material available and then, in your initial discussion board post, summarize the different articles/viewpoints you have discovered.  This is an important exercise in preparing any argument because you need to be familiar with different opinions surrounding issue. After your short summaries, write a paragraph explaining where you stand on the issue.  Finish your post by creating a working thesis statement.  Your thesis statement should clearly present an opinion and it should make a specific claim about the topic. Whichever topic you choose, you will eventually need to develop an argumentative thesis statement that clearly identifies your position on the topic. Remember that a thesis for an argumentative essay should be debatable and should clearly take a stand.  Refer to the readings in this section to help you create a debatable thesis statement.
