Details
Overview
Prepare a 3–4-page report on nurse-patient communication in which you address types of communication, factors that influence the communication experience, and how the patient experience affects health outcomes. Recommend evidence-based strategies to improve nurse-patient communication and explain how the strategies consider patient demographics.Nursing professionals do not only communicate with others within their organizations—often, they are also the first point of contact with patients. Thus, nursing professionals need superior communication skills to explain procedures and medication instructions, as well as to listen to what patients need to say.SHOW MORE

Context
Clark and Paraska (2014) suggest that understanding how people communicate is the first step in learning how to teach patients more effective methods of listening, self-awareness, and self-expression—and also in identifying barriers in communication. The process of communication can be difficult, as we can interpret meaning based on a variety of hidden messages—some conscious and intentional—some not.

Assessment Instructions
Imagine that, in an effort to reduce the number of patient complaints about nursing staff, organizational leadership has asked your department to prepare some preliminary research on a number of different topics. Your topic is patient communication, such as the following:
The types of communication that take place between nurses and patients.
The factors that can influence both positive and negative experiences.
How the experience can impact health care outcomes.
Strategies that can improve the communication between nurses and patients.
PREPARATION
Search the Capella library and the Internet for peer-reviewed journal articles or other professional resources on the topic of effective communication with patients. You will need at least 3 resources to support your work in this assessment.
DIRECTIONS
Prepare a report on patient-nurse communication in which you include the following:
Describe the types of communication that take place between nurses and clients/patients. Do not forget to consider types of communication beyond verbal and written on paper.
Explain the factors that influence positive and negative experiences during the communication process. (Hint: Consider the experiences of both the client/patient and the nurse. Also, consider things such as age, gender, culture, and so on, of both the client/patient and the nurse.)
Explain how the client/patient experience can impact health care outcomes.
Recommend evidence-based strategies for improving communication between client/patients and nurses.
Explain how the strategies consider different client/patient demographics.
Format this assessment as a report that you would give to your supervisor. It may be helpful for you to review how your organization formats internal reports and incorporate your findings. You are still required to adhere to APA guidelines for in-text citations and references, as well as for formatting your reference page.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Include a title page and a reference page.
Ensure your assessment is 3–4 pages in length.
Use double-spaced, 12-pt., Times New Roman font.
Also Check Out:
You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.
Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.
Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.
The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.
My personal worldview has been shaped by my experiences, family and friends, and religious beliefs. Growing up my parents had different religious beliefs, and both stressed the importance of respecting other’s beliefs and opinions. They would always tell me that no two people would ever share all the same beliefs or opinions. They allowed me to take my experiences and curiosities and create my own views and opinions. All my beliefs may not be the same as my parents or even other Christians, but I believe this does not make me any less of a person or a Christian. I grew up to be open-minded and compassionate of others and their beliefs. My father would always tell me not to talk about sex, religion, or politics with anyone. He would explain to me that people would take my beliefs and use them against me, or I would offend someone by sharing my thoughts or opinion. Initially growing up I believed my father was correct and I would remain silent and just listen when others would talk about those subjects. It took me years to realize that sitting in silence does not show respect for others but could ultimately shut doors and make people feel as if I did not care. I loved listening to other people’s beliefs and opinions, but how I expressed myself I realized I was missing an opportunity to connect with them. I learned how to ask appropriate questions and truly listen and hear someone. I am still growing and learning, but I feel like I am better at expressing myself and connecting with others.
As a nurse it is imperative that we listen to our patients, respect one another, and show empathy for others. Cultural competency and cultural awareness are essential components of being and advanced practice nurse. As a nurse it is imperative to be self-aware of our own beliefs and opinions and provide mutual respect for our patients and our community. Being self-aware and seeking knowledge of other people’s culture and beliefs is a lifelong adventure (DeNisco & Barker, 2019). We must listen, communicate, and respect our patients and community. It all begins with accepting our own opinions and acknowledging that our beliefs shape us into who we are today. We must seek basic knowledge of different cultures, religions, and communities. Although we may learn the basics, we must accept that we will never fully know everything. Showing respect and listening to the needs of others will assist in gaining trust so we can provide quality care and improve the lives and overall health of others. It is important that we ask questions and strive to be better and grow as individuals. I hope to continue my journey of cultural awareness and self-awareness and be the absolute best for my patients and community. I feel as though all the lessons I have gained in my life and experiences will help me continue to become the best nurse I can be.

For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me.
Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.
Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own?
Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.
