Abuse of children
In general, the term “abuse” refers to the most heinous acts perpetrated against children. 
A kid who has been abused is one whose parent or other legally responsible person inflicts serious physical injury on the child, causes a considerable risk of serious physical injury on the child, or commits sex abuse against the child. 
A person who does any of these things to a kid in their care, or who allows someone else to do these things to a child, might be considered abusive. 
Sections 412 of the Social Services Law and Section 1012 of the Family Court Act define child abuse.

 

Child Abuse and Neglect

 

Maltreatment refers to the level of care given to a child by people who are accountable for the child. 
Maltreatment occurs when a parent or other legally responsible person for the care of a child abuses the kid or puts the child in imminent danger of harm by neglecting to provide the child with the bare minimum of food, clothes, shelter, education, or medical care while financially able to do so. 
Maltreatment can also occur as a result of a child’s desertion or a lack of proper supervision. 
If a parent’s excessive use of drugs or alcohol interferes with their capacity to effectively oversee their child, the child may be maltreated.

 

Section 1012 of the Family Court Act defines neglect. 
Section 412 of the Social Services Law defines maltreatment. 
The terms neglect and maltreatment are used interchangeably on this website, despite the fact that they are not synonymous in law.

 

Abuse of the body

 

Subject inflicts or enables to be inflicted on a child by non-accidental methods substantial physical injury [such as burns, fractures, head trauma, and internal injuries].
