“Public Spaces, Community Places” was launched by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) in 2014.
It’s the first state-sponsored award program that combines community development and crowdsourcing.

Patronicity and the MEDC collaborated to change the way grants are submitted for, analyzed, and granted.
Projects that qualify for the Public Spaces, Community Places award procedure receive matching funds to those that are crowdfunded.

According to Patronicity data, 49 projects were engaged between June 2014 and September 2015, with 47 achieving their objective; one project is still ongoing, leaving one project that did not fulfill its target.
During this time, the initial $1,461,000 grant generated $1,787,354 in crowdfunding donations and $10,858,777 in private investment.
This program has fantastic 9.65 percent return on investment!

Patronicity co-founder Ebrahim Varachia was interviewed by Ingrid Ault, Michigan State University Extension Community Development instructor, who explained it this way: “[The MEDC] is eager to expand the program as it has been tremendously successful.”
Because donations are perceived as more significant, grantors are searching for community members to propose projects.”

Midtown Detroit Inc.’s initial project was The Green Alley Project.
They are non-profit planning and development organization that works to improve public awareness, appreciation, and use of the Midtown Detroit neighborhood while also supporting its physical upkeep and regeneration.

Because of the concentration on placemaking, which focuses on making community place where people want to live, work, and play, Midtown Detroit has experienced cultural rebirth.
People react strongly when location that was previously perceived as bad and underutilized is reimagined as something unexpected and positive.

Green Alley in Midtown Before

When alleys are turned from linear wastelands to thriving neighborhood greenways, favorable communal, environmental, and economic consequences are demonstrated.
Green Alley was 415-foot-long alley that was changed with the goal of integrating future developments, improving walkability, and community connectivity.
It launched to great acclaim in June of 2011, prompting the Shinola Company to contribute an additional $100,000 to support the project.

Because of the program’s apparent success, an additional $2 million has been promised to continue it next year.
This is impressive given that the MEDC was compelled to reduce its workforce by 25-30% in 2015.
Varachia noted, “Essentially, [the Michigan State legislature] took away the MEDC’s funding and used it to fund potholes.”

“Midtown Green Alley Following”

The MEDC will approve initiatives that meet the criteria, but the community will ultimately decide whether or not to support the project by voting with their funds.
“Pressing “like” button is one thing; pressing “like” button with money sign attached is quite another,” Varachia explained.
“The impact is significantly larger when people vote with their credit cards for causes that are important to them.”
