The federal government’s preventative program for creating a healthier nation is called Healthy People 2020. 
It is a set of national health objectives aimed at identifying the most serious preventable health concerns and setting national goals to address them. 
Healthy People 2020 envisions a world in which everyone lives long and healthy lives. 
Healthy People 2020’s overarching goals include achieving high-quality, longer lives free of preventable disease, disability, injury, and premature death; achieving health equity, eliminating disparities, and improving the health of all groups; creating social and physical environments that promote good health for all; and promoting quality of life, healthy development, and healthy behaviors across all life stages. 
There are 42 issue areas in the plan, including 13 new ones. 
There are 24 specific objectives for heart disease and stroke, as well as additional objectives in adjacent fields that are relevant to heart disease and stroke.
Healthy People lays out ten-year national goals based on science for enhancing the health of all Americans. 
Healthy People has been setting standards and tracking progress for three decades in order to:
Encourage cross-community and cross-sector collaboration.
Individuals should be empowered to make well-informed health decisions.
Assess the effectiveness of preventative efforts.
Introducing the Healthy People 2020 initiative.
With the announcement of its ambitious, yet feasible, 10-year agenda for improving the nation’s health on December 2, 2010, Healthy People 2020 continues this tradition.
