Chapter : 6
Reading Critically- Page: 294
Analyzing Berkeley’s Subjective Idealism
1. What is your reaction to Berkeley’s claim that the only things that exist in the universe are minds and ideas that exist in the minds? If you are not comfortable with his eliminating an independent existing external world, how would you go about refuting his ideas?
2. Unfortunately, Berkeley’s major writings were published after Locke’s death. If he had still been alive, how do you think Locke would have responded to Berkeley’s criticism of his views?
3. Samuel Johnson, a famous English writer who lived at the same time as Berkeley, responded to Berkeley’s subjectivist idealism by kicking a stone and sending it flying into the air, while saying, “I refute him thus.” Do you think this is a persuasive “argument” by Johnson? Why or why not?

Thinking Philosophy- Page: 331
What Are the Limits of Your Knowledge?
One of the core elements of thinking philosophically is reflecting thoughtfully on your intellectual development. Consider the philosophical themes that you have studied in your introduction to philosophy course.
1. Share one of the philosophical themes, noting the relative strength (or weakness) of your belief in this area.
2. Be sure that your response is both honest and specific. It represents a rough evaluation of the progress you have made in learning to think philosophically about the most difficult areas of life. This is a journey that you will continue for the rest if your life, and ongoing critical reflection is the tool you can use to chart your growth and ensure that you are on the path you wish to take.
