Capella University Critical Thinking Model Discussion
Capella University Critical Thinking Model Discussion
Question Description
CRITICAL THINKING MODEL
Critical thinking involves the ability to be in control of one’s thinking. It includes the ability to consciously examine the elements of one’s reasoning, or that of another, and evaluate that reasoning against universal intellectual standards of clarity, accuracy, precision, relevance, depth, breadth, and logic. It also involves the structured examination of sources of information.
For your initial post:
Review Paul and Elder’s Critical Thinking Model media piece from this week’s What You Need to Know. You may recall that you were introduced to the Paul and Elder model in your first course at Capella. Since that time, you have used critical thinking to develop your coursework as you considered problems in the field of psychology, reviewed research, applied theories, and worked toward recommended solutions.
Reflect on the eight elements of thought in the model and on the intellectual standards. Describe some specific ways you have implemented some of the elements and standards into your academic work. To give your peers and instructor a good understanding of your application, as you compose your post, name specific elements and standards. Discuss ways the elements and standards have applied to your everyday thinking and behavior as you interact with people in your personal and professional life.

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.
Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.
Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.
The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.
As a clinical nurse working on a medical surgical unit with an emphasis on orthopedics this writer sees a wide variety of patients across all different populations. In Southern California there is a large population of homeless individuals and families. It is my hope that in my career I can better serve the homeless population.
Homelessness, health disparities, and health inequities are all intertwined creating a difficult situation and negative outcomes for patients. Homelessness is associated with shorter life expectancy and higher morbidity. Patients that are homeless have a decreased availability in both primary and preventative health care leading these patients to have late diagnoses and uncontrolled illness that if treated earlier would lead to better outcomes for the patient (Stafford, A., & Wood, L, 2017).
Access to affordable healthcare is at utmost importance for the homeless population to better diagnose, treat, and manage health. Unfortunately, there are many boundaries in both health and social issues that lead this population to have poor outcomes. As a clinical nurse I work closely with case management and social work to attempt to assist the homeless population. We assist these patients to file for emergency medical assistance, provide the opportunities to find shelter, and fill prescriptions through hospital programs. At my hospital we provide all medications to those that cannot afford it and without insurance through a program called Project Help. Project help allows us to fill all medications at no cost to the patient prior to discharge. By attaining my Master of Science in Nursing with an emphasis in leadership I hope to one day become a manager or a director to better serve my community. We must reduce the impact of homelessness on health, and I believe thru perseverance and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams we can help decrease health disparities.
LopesWrite Policy
For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me.
Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.
Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own?
Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.
