You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.
Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.
Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.
The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.
In some senses, all nurses are called to be leaders regardless of what role they are in. Nurses lead by their example in the community, advocate for their patients and the public and foster collaboration between the interdisciplinary healthcare team (Whitney, 2018). However, there are also formal leadership roles nurses can step into within the healthcare field. One example is nurse managers. This role is less hands on with direct patient care and more focused on supervising unit staff and managing the day to day operations of a nursing unit (Azar, 2021). They also help manage conflict with nurses, patients and other members of the healthcare team. Nurse managers are typically responsible for hiring decisions and conduct yearly evaluations of staff and provide remediation when necessary. Furthermore, they are responsible for ensuring the staff are in compliance with hospital policies and procedures and that they are up to date with all of their requirements (Azar, 2021). This role requires certain leadership traits in order to be successful in the position. Nurse managers must be strong communicators and have developed their interpersonal skills in order to work with a diverse staff (Azar, 2021). It is also important to be a servant leader and lead by example, which fosters a sense of trust between the staff and the manager. Managers who are most successful in this role typically are good at building strong relationships with their staff and are fair and compassionate.
