Ashford 4: – Week 3 – Assignment

Determine the Quality of Information

As mentioned previously, at the end of this course, you will create an “Annotated Bibliography” Final Paper on a topic within your major field of study. This week, you will begin to evaluate websites related to your research question. The websites you evaluate may be used in your Final Paper in Week Five. First, watch the video below to understand the process.

Read the handout Evaluating Information – Applying the CRAAP Test and view Google Inside Search: All Tips & Tricks before completing this assignment.

Now that you have a basic understanding of what the Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose (CRAAP) Test is and how to effectively search for information online, it is time to apply this method to the evaluation of web sources. In this assignment, you are tasked with locating three websites that will help you answer your research question. Two of these websites must pass all five criteria of the CRAAP Test.

Using the                     Determine the Quality of Information Worksheet, you will apply the elements of the CRAAP test to your chosen websites. You are expected to provide a brief evaluation of how each website met or did not meet the requirements of the CRAAP Test, as directed in the worksheet. You will also reflect on the differences you found between the two websites that passed the CRAAP Test and the one that did not. Download the worksheet to your computer and save it in an easy to find location. You will then complete the worksheet based on your research and evaluation of websites, saving your final work.

Once you have completed the Determine the Quality of Information Worksheet, submit the completed worksheet through the Assignment Submission button in the online classroom.

In this class, you have three   tutoring services available: Paper Review, Live Chat, and Tutor E-mail.   Click on the Ashford Writing Center (AWC) tab in the left-navigation menu to   learn more about these tutoring options and how to get help with your   writing.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.
You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.

Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.

Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.

The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.
