  1. As a Mexican American woman who went to a predominately white and asian high school, I experienced more than a handful of racist experiences. The one that comes to my mind first is when I was a junior in high school and everyone dressed up in costumes at school because it was halloween. I had a friend in my first class of the day who wasn’t Mexican and he arrived at our zero period class wearing overalls with paint splatters on them, a baseball cap, and a fake mustache. At first glance I was confused, but when I asked him what his costume was supposed to be he whispered to me that he was dressed as a Mexican. Another friend of mine immediately told him how inappropriate and racist his costume was. This was especially offensive to me because I was the only Mexican person in the entire classroom and felt highly offended and singled out.

After watching the three videos I felt empathy and sorrow for the characters in the show. I understood the wrong of the world and how unequal the United States is when it comes to including people of all colors. I can relate to the clip of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and am constantly aware of my racial appearance as a driver. I’ve talked to peers of mine who aren’t colored and they’ve told me how they’ve talked their ways out of traffic tickets and if I were ever pulled over, talking my way out of a ticket wouldn’t be a thought in my mind. I’d be more focused on having short, sweet answers, like the character said in the clip. I believe that these clips are relevant today. There is still inequality in our government system and racism scattered throughout the United States and other parts of the world.

  1. It’s blatantly wrong for people to be judged by ethnicity.
  2. I believe it’s extremely important and essential to study diversity and race in order to become a well-rounded person. If someone only studies one specific thing without experiencing outside sources, experiences, or opinions, they will undoubtedly be close-minded. Without the knowledge of diversity and race, a person cannot be inclusive and sensitive to other people’s situations that differ from theirs.

“People who are different from one another in race, gender, and other dimensions bring unique information and experiences to bear on the task at hand. A male and a female engineer might have perspectives as different from one another as an engineer and a physicist—and that is a good thing” (https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/how_diversity_makes_us_smarter (Links to an external site.))
