In Plato’s Republic Socrates argues that even a band of thieves or robbers would have to have some sense of justice or ethics between them in order to be able to function as a group, even though their overall actions may be highly unethical. We see in book four, the group of bandits display a kind of internal ethics and loyalty to each other, in particular to Lamachus, and Alcimus, even while they are committing clearly unethical and immoral actions. What happens to Lamachus? Do the bandits display any ethical action towards him, and if so how might we explain this contradiction with the unethical actions they perform in plundering, murdering others?
