French existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre once described

a particularly challenging moral conflict: A student is living at home with their ailing mother during wartime. They are getting by, but only barely, and the only reason the mother is able to stay alive, is the constant care of her child. Then, when the student’s sibling is killed at the front, the government conscribes them. They have to make a decision: They can either join the war effort and leave their mother at home to die alone, or they can dodge the draft and stay with their mother.

Consider this conflict from either a Daoist perspective, or an Islamic perspective. From the chosen perspective, what should the student do, and why?
