Our nation is built on a free-market system. The delivery of health care is no exception. The United States spends more per capita than other countries in the world without quality outcomes. It has been stated that the United States is behind in the efficient and timely delivery of care as well as that it is the responsibility of all stakeholders to find a resolution to the inefficiencies of the current health care system. Therefore, it is the responsibility of all stakeholders to ensure the delivery of quality health care in the most effective and efficient manner.

This week you will review the simulation titled, What’s bothering Trevor: Considering Healthcare – Cost Quality and Access, in Chapter 1.1 of your course textbook. Note: You will need to be online in order to view the simulation. If you download the chapter, you will not be able to see the simulation.

Once you have completed reviewing each of the simulations,

• Examine the concerns and issues within each simulation coming from each of the following stakeholder perspectives:

o patient

o family

o health care professionals.

• Determine what could have been done differently to address the issues identified in all the options in relation to cost, quality, and access.

Guided Response: Read through your classmates’ posts and find two reviews that differed from yours. If this had happened to you, what actions could you have taken to maintain patient satisfaction with the delivery of quality health care as it relates to cost, quality, and access?

What’s bothering Trevor: Considering Healthcare- Cost, Quality, and Access Patient: Trevor is a sick individual who is skeptical about seeking and receiving the proper treatment due to him not having medical insurance after losing his job. Worried about his cost out of pocket, Trevor refused to see his PCP causing his symptoms to worsen. Having to render full payment at time of service and it being a far distance, Trevor opted out seeking treatment from an urgent care. Trevor eventually visited the ER where he was admitted into the hospital as a patient. Trevor is now responsible for a much more costly bill and his prescribed medications are expensive adding to the cost. Family: Like many individuals would be, Trevor’s wife is very concerned about his health. Not thinking about cost, she wants Trevor to immediately seek medical treatment. Trevor waiting for days to inquire medical treatment with his condition not improving and wanting to wait until his follow up appointment to get his prescription filled is not only affecting him, his wife is also affected.
