History Article Review

Scholarly papers or journal articles allow historians a place in which to test new ideas and approaches to the past.  Many scholars will try out their ideas by writing a short article (20-40 pages) for publication in a scholarly journal as a way to provide public discussion and feedback.  These new ideas are then debated among scholars in the professional field within their school, at conferences, and again through the publication of other works such as books and lectures.  These journal articles may become books in the future and the ideas they express may even become accepted by the historical field and repeated to wider audiences and subsequent generations.  Your textbook is filled with ideas, arguments, and concepts that started off as just one person’s particular view of the past.  But through testing against the historical evidence, conversation among scholars, and further tweaking that particular view became an accepted fact about the past.  Historians are always attempting to find new and innovative ways to understand the past.  Scholarly journal articles are an excellent source for new ideas and approaches. Read your journal article and then fill out the Academic Review Worksheet, located in the Article Review Worksheet folder.  You can fill in the worksheet on MS Word and then submit it below by attaching the saved Word Document.  All paper should be in .doc or .docx format. NO .pages Your answers should be at least 750 words total for the entire worksheet and contain detailed answers to the questions. Word Count does not include the questions on the worksheet. If you quote from your article, please place the quote in quotation marks (” “) and cite the page number of the quote at the end of your sentence like this (p. 56).
