Human Sexuality
Paper #1 – Topic of Interest – Content Paper (1) Using a popular search engine like google, search for and find a current topic or issue [last 5 years] related to human sexuality that interests you. The topic itself could be something we have researched or known about for longer than 5 years but there must be something about the topic that is recent [e.g., new legislation or a change in legislation, new or expanded research, new treatment approaches / innovations, new ways of thinking about the topic, etc.] (2) Once you have done your initial search and found a topic, focus your search to find out as much as you can about your chosen topic. Feel free to search using popular search engines but remember to verify the sources you are reviewing. In your searches you will also come across references to scholarly journal articles, make sure you track down the actual article [using the library databases – cut and paste the title of the article into the database search to find the desired article] being referred to and read it for yourself – reading a summary of an article written by someone else is taking their ‘word’ for what was said and it is your responsibility to read it for yourself and form your own opinions [essential for critical thinking]. Many of the articles you come across online required you to have a subscription or a license to view the article in it’s entirety, this is why I am suggesting you search for the article, by title, through our library databases because in most cases, the library already subscribes or has the necessary license for you to access the material. (3) Prepare and write your content paper, making sure to present the reader with a logical and well sourced overview / summary of your chosen topic. Make sure to provide the reader with sufficient information so that they can understand the nature and the scope of the topic being presented – they don’t need everything so you will have to decide which pieces of information are crucial to a readers understanding of the topic. Depending on the nature of your topic, readers may need to be provided with a brief historical timeline including key players, dates, innovations, pieces of legislation; a brief historical timeline of key research findings; and in most cases, readers will need basic information such as statistics and important vocabulary. (4 ) Make sure to consult the posted General Guidelines for Paper#1 – Content Paper as you complete your assignment (5) Format this work according to the guidelines set out by you chosen style [APA, MLA, CMS] (6) Make sure to include in-text citations and provide a reference page (7) This paper typically takes students a minimum of 6 pages – double spaced [not including title and reference pages] to complete. (8) Direct quotes should be avoided unless it is critical that the original text remain in the author’s own words like in the case of a famous speech or lyrics to a song. All other information should be paraphrased using your own words and an appropriate in-text citation and reference must be provided (9) It is expected that you will proofreading your work for spelling and grammar errors as well as issues with organization of information and transitions.
