Welcome to Week Two

Healthcare organizations and the healthcare system in general have been measured by access, timeliness, quality, outcomes, customer service, and costs.  The healthcare value framework, however, looks at the overall value to the patient, not necessarily focusing on the usual criteria.  The term “value” means the worth of something monetarily, or the importance of something (“Value | Definition of Value by Merriam-Webster,” 2015).  As a patient, how would you determine value?  As a healthcare organization or provider, how would they determine value?  Imagine sitting in a huge auditorium where the discussion was healthcare value.  Imagine how many varied opinions would be there.  Hence, the challenge when trying to determine the value.  Analytics has helped by taking the massive amount of data that is part of a healthcare organization and the patient care process and providing information that can be used to make decisions.

One of the areas that has greatly influenced health analytics is Health Information Technology (HIT).  Health Information Technology.  According to (Office for Civil Rights (OCR), n.d.), HIT is the exchange of health information in an electronic environment.  Health Information includes any information that has been used in the care of the patient, including demographics, diagnosis, treatments, and outcomes.  Using electronic means allows for greater efficiency and accuracy, as long as the method of entry into the health record is accurate.  If humans are the ones entering the information, there will be errors, because humans are not perfect and do make mistakes.  HIT has the purpose of improving quality of care, preventing medical errors, reducing costs of care, decreasing paperwork and making the processes more efficient, and expanding access to affordable healthcare (Office for Civil Rights (OCR), n.d.).  There was a mandate for Electronic Health Records (EHRs) that allow access to these records and healthcare professionals are trying to figure out how to use all of this data ((Diana, 2014).  The challenge with electronic records continues to be the security and privacy of the data, and following the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations for accessing and releasing this information.

Healthcare organizations, and individuals, are being inundated with large amounts of data.  For example, there are many innovations taking place with technology in the field of health analytics  (Diana, 2014):

  • Wireless, wearable devices such as Fitbits (expected to flood insurers and providers)
  • Social media (fighting insurance fraud and improving customer service)
  • Society is creating their own healthcare metrics for quality of care
  • Analytics is available for smaller organizations thanks to the cloud capabilities, but resources still scare in smaller companies
  • Not a “one-size-fits-all” for healthcare organizations—analytics need to be customized
  • Population health enhancements and readmissions reduction
  • Response rates for EMS improved, saving lives
  • Outcomes research resulting in improved treatments of specific illnesses
  • Predictive modeling to identify patients at risk
  • Improve patient safety and reduce adverse outcomes

Determining the value of healthcare and analytics both have its challenges.  The more you learn about the data and information needed, the more valuable the reporting and analytics become.  Investing in information technology can be expensive and it is difficult to determine the return on investment (ROI).  Oftentimes organizations invest in grandiose systems but fail to invest in the training necessary to get full use of the features offered through the systems.  Continued training also needs to occur once the system has been used for a while—the users will have more questions once they have experience.  Do your research and review best practices from other healthcare organizations before investing.
