RE: Discussion – Week 6

As the years go by Healthcare is becoming more and more reliant on technology. Going from paper charting to electronic charting, and making MyChart apps for phones so that healthcare records and information can be in anyone’s palm. “The four most common benefits cited for EHRs were (1) increased delivery of guidelines-based care, (2) enhanced capacity to perform surveillance and monitoring for disease conditions, (3) reduction in medication errors, (4) decreased use of care” (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017 p. 274). These four points are well worded and pretty accurate from what I have witnessed personally in my career with EHRs.

As we know, An (EHR) is a digital version of a patient’s paper chart. EHRs are real-time, patient-centered records that make information available instantly and securely to authorized users. (USA.gov, 2019) Where I have worked we have always had electronic records and have heavily relied on electronic charting. It has made it easier to collect data/information to make for a quicker treatment plan. It was incredibly helpful to always have the information so easily accessible. I believe that we are just going to continue to expand on our use of social media in health care, which could have some negative effects. We are often taught about potential HIPAA violations and how to prevent them. However, there is the concern for hackers that could get into the software and obtain a large amount of information very quickly. “Electronic health records software present a tempting target to hackers. Ever since Congress enacted the (HIPAA) in 1996, organizations with an EHR are required to safeguard sensitive patient information from computer criminals bent on breaking into the system.” (Rosario, 2019) I believe that the current issues of possible hacking in our EHR will only increase if we add more artificial intelligence to the healthcare facilities. We need to find a better way to better protect and deter hackers that just a yearly education module, especially since technology is going to be used in healthcare more and more.

Throughout history, technological advancements have appeared for one purpose before finding applications elsewhere that lead to spikes in its usage and development. The internet, for example, was originally developed to share research before becoming a staple of work and entertainment. But technology—new and repurposed—will undoubtedly continue to be a driver of healthcare information. Informaticists often stay tuned to trends to monitor what the next new technology will be or how the next new idea for applying existing technology can benefit outcomes.

In this Discussion, you will reflect on your healthcare organization’s use of technology and offer a technology trend you observe in your environment.

To Prepare:

  • Reflect on the Resources related to digital information tools and technologies.
  • Consider your healthcare organization’s use of healthcare technologies to manage and distribute information.
  • Reflect on current and potential future trends, such as use of social media and mobile applications/telehealth, Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled asset tracking, or expert systems/artificial intelligence, and how they may impact nursing practice and healthcare delivery.

Post a brief description of general healthcare technology trends, particularly related to data/information you have observed in use in your healthcare organization or nursing practice. Describe any potential challenges or risks that may be inherent in the technologies associated with these trends you described. Then, describe at least one potential benefit and one potential risk associated with data safety, legislation, and patient care for the technologies you described. Next, explain which healthcare technology trends you believe are most promising for impacting healthcare technology in nursing practice and explain why. Describe whether this promise will contribute to improvements in patient care outcomes, efficiencies, or data management. Be specific and provide examples.
