Think about conversations around politics when you were in primary school (around age 10). What were some of the ways you learned about the political establishment through family members and friends? How were you politically socialized as a child? I have to admit that I don’t remember to much from that time so I had to look it up to jog my memory on what was happening politically. January 91′ Operation Desert Storm begins, March 91′ 3 officers are recorded beating Rodney King, July 91′ Jeffery Dahmer and Mike Tyson are arrested, both for different things, August 91′ Super Nintendo Entertainment system is released in the United States, November 91′ Magic Johnson announces he is HIV positive, and The women’s FIFA world cup team defeats Norway for their first World Cup win, December 91′ the Cold War ends when Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev resigns and the Soviet Union is dissolved.  To be honest I can remember being 10 and listening to my father and his coworkers talk about war, pay, benefits, I think I talked briefly about this in the previous post discussion. I can remember talking with my friends about video games, sports, and racial injustice that was happening during that time. My father and grandmother were very influential at home in regards to my political socialization when it came to military news, public concerns, and racial injustice. My friends at school and their friends also had an impact on my political socialization when it came to sports, video games and racial injustice. Literature has found that what we label ” community ” does have an impact on political attitudes and behavior that is independent of the effects of individual characteristics such as race,  occupation, income, and party identification. ( Gimpel, 2003, p. 44) I really like the example of Plato’s writings the allegory of the cave, as it describes a people being chained in a cave with only one point of view until they are let out and see a different world and are exposed to new points of views. ( Cobb, 2019, p. 52 ) That is important I think because it shows that people need to have a open mind and really see a person and or persons views.
