Presentation
Students will create a visual presentation, similar to what you might present at a professional or academic conference or a job talk in some occupations. You may use PowerPoint, Prezi, or other presentation software that meets the criteria of a professional presentation. If you are unsure, ask me far in advance of the due date.
Rules for the presentation:
- Students must use a professional presentation program (not a Word doc, hand-written paper, etc.).
- Presentations must be at least 4-8 minutes long. Students will lose points for presentations of less than 4 minutes.
- Do not write paragraphs on your slides. Use short phrases or notes. The rest of the information should be presented verbally in your recording. Make sure your video is uploaded to YouTube and that you give me a link and permission in settings to see the video. Click here for a link to my tutorial for using screencast-o-matic and uploading to YouTube.
- Make sure the presentation is legible and the text is easy to read. Images should only be included if they add to, as opposed to take away from, the presentation. They should be few and easy to see along with the text.
- All students must submit their presentations complete with all parts of the prompt below, and a “Reference” slide at the end with all sources cited in American Sociological Association (ASA) style. See the ASA style guide here.
Instructions:
Select three assigned readings from the course. You may not use any readings from Module #1. With these three readings, make sure to emphasize:
- intersectionality
- sociological imagination (connection between individuals and society)
Follow these steps:
- Title slide with student name
- Body slides:
- Compare the three articles.
- What are the most important terms, concepts, theories, and/or empirical findings from each article?
- Note that some articles are more or less theoretical and others are more empirical (conclusions/findings from conducting social scientific research)
- What does each of them say about social statuses and identities such as race, class, gender, sexual orientation, etc.?
- What does each of them say about family? How do the authors define the term “family”?
- What does each of them say about the connection between individuals, families, and society?
- What does each of them say about different kinds of families and their access to resources (material resources like money/wealth but also cultural and social resources like emotional support)?
- Contrast the three articles.
- What are the differences in the use of terms, concepts, theories, and/or empirical findings from each article?
- Which terms/concepts/theories were author(s) absent that other author(s) included?
- How did definitions of similar or the same terms differ between the articles? (How did various authors differ in their terms?)
- What are the differences in how social statuses and identities such as race, class, gender, sexual orientation, etc. are discussed?
- How do they describe or define families differently?
- How do they differently address (or fail to address) the connection between individuals and society (the sociological imagination)?
- How do they differ in their discussions of various family types and their access to material and nonmaterial resources?
- What could each of the authors include to better apply the sociological imagination using intersectionality?
- Be specific using references and examples.
- Last slide should include your references in proper ASA citation style.
