Two agents of socialization that have influenced my childhood are
family and school. Both my mom and dad’s sides of the family are quite different. My mother’s side showed me love, support, acceptance and even friendship amongst my cousins. I looked forward to holidays and celebrations, like I found refuge in those happy moments. My father’s side taught me about substance abuse issues and manipulation, and how not to treat people you love. Both sides gave me great perspective into how one’s lifestyle can be like night and day, depending on your choosing. School was my outlet to be who I really am. I loved participating in after school activities and seeing my friends. It also gave me an opportunity to seek guidance from those outside my family, like teachers and counselors. I can guarantee I picked up on many social norms from going to public school! Family is the most important thing to me and have a huge influence on my life today. I am still very close with my cousins, who are more like my friends, and we spend a lot of our free time together. I no longer rely on my parents but I am learning what I can from them every day. Being back in school has also given me another avenue to socialize and talk about subjects other than the weather. This sociology class in itself is shaping my perspective in so many areas of my life! I am grateful for the opportunity to go to school as a woman, as I know many are not so lucky.

2- The two agents of socialization that influenced my childhood the most are Religion and school peers. I did not grow up in my home country, however, I lived in 4 different countries in a span of 14 years. each country had its own norms and expectations. starting with religion, I was raised in Islam-dominant countries, while being a Christian. The norms in my household were super different from what I would go through outside of my home. Moving on, since my family moves much, I didn’t have many friends. Until my family settled in a country for 6 years, I attended school with the best peer group I ever had. Even though we had major cultural differences, we still connected. Due to that, I had a grade increase and a better understanding of school work because it was “fun” to do it with them. As well as a very stable social life.
When it comes to religion, the cultural experiences caused me to be open-minded toward people. It taught me how to respect other people’s beliefs no matter if I believe in them or not. Also, no matter what color, race, or religion they follow; they are still human just like you. moving on to school peers, I am still in touch with the only school group I had 6 years ago even though I moved countries. It has caused me to think that I will never be able to find friends as good as that group.
