More tips for the Final Essay Assignment
Format: Your essay must include a front title page and also a bibliography detailing your
research sources. Please see the course outline for a discussion of plagiarism.
Introduction: You must have an introductory paragraph in which you clearly state the
main argument (thesis) of your essay that you are going to defend in your paper. The
introductory paragraph informs the reader, about your objectives, why you are interested
in this topic and what the reader should expect in the following pages.
Body: You must have several paragraphs that sequentially explore your main ideas and
support your main argument. Each paragraph should contain ONE major theme or idea
that is explored in-depth. You need to use the textbook chapters and at least 3 of the
assigned readings posted in Library E-Reserves on the course web site effectively and
by giving reference to some of the main arguments and examples in these readings. You
should connect the paragraphs in such a way that the reader understands why they
proceed in the order that you have put them. Do not put too many sub-titles. Avoid very
short or very long paragraphs. It is a good habit to prepare an outline before you start
writing your paper. This way, you can see the flows in your argument.
Conclusion: You should also have a brief concluding paragraph in which you
summarize your main findings, mention limitations of your research and provide
recommendations for future research, if you have any.

References & Bibliography Information
Outside academic references that you use must come from refereed journal article
preferably from sociological sources. A list of possible journals can be found at the
D2L site.
You may NOT use newspaper articles, mass and popular sources like film
reviews, mass magazines, and personal opinion web sites such as blogs as
academic sources. You can include them as additional sources, as long as you
cite them properly according to APA rules.
Statscan and other research-based institutions are also acceptable web citation
sources. If you are not sure about the quality or acceptability of an on-line source it is
best to check with me.
Students often make a mistake of citing the editors not the original authors of the chapters
in edited volumes. Please be careful in learning proper citation rules if you are
referencing chapters in books (i.e. our text book).
References must be used for indirect and direct sources of information. If you rephrase
an author, you must reference their text. If you directly quote from an author, you must
also reference their text. Your references must be in APA forma
