Utilitarianism and Kantian EthicsImagine that a country is faced with a health crisis in which the best course of

action would be for everyone to stay at home and isolate themselves.

Unfortunately, many people are not doing so, and continue to gather in public

places. The leader of the country is faced with a choice about whether to force

people to stay at home by establishing police checkpoints and penalties for

people who travel for nonessential reasons, or to continue to allow people to

choose for themselves.

How would a utilitarian assess this situation, what

would their recommendation be, and what would be their reasoning? How

would a Kantian assess this situation, what would their recommendation

be, and what would be their reasoning? Which viewpoint do you think is

preferable and why?

In answering, discuss utilitarian arguments and Kantian arguments, showing

which you judge to be the stronger. Be sure to focus closely on the philosophical

arguments derived from these two theoretical approaches, and as well clearly

describing those theories and why they would take the particular position that

they do.
