William of Ockham received higher education in London Greyfriars, a distinguished establishment ( much like our modern-day universities like Oxford). Furthering his instruction to “high school,” it is thought that Ockham’s education centred around basic logic and “science” (natural philosophy). Ockham’s writings were divided into two groups: the “academic” writings and the “political” ones. His academic writings were divided into two sub-groupings: the “theological” work and the “philosophical.” Among such writings is Occam’s Razor.

Time Period

William practiced philosophy in the 13th to mid 14th century, also known as the medieval times. The medieval period was closely connected to Christian thought. At the time, the chief philosophers were churchmen. Philosophers who opposed the church’s views would be excommunicated. In medieval times, philosophy was very religion-oriented rather than being focused on logic and rational thinking.

Judith Butler, born February 24, 1956, in Cleveland, Ohio, is an American philosopher and gender theorist whose theories of the performative nature of gender and sex were influential within Francocentric philosophy, cultural theory, queer theory, and some schools of philosophical feminism from the late 20th century. Butler received education from Yale University, receiving B.A. (1978), M.A. (1982), M.Phil. (1982), and Ph.D. (1984). degrees. She taught at Wesleyan University, George Washington University, Johns Hopkins University, as a Maxine Elliot Professor of Rhetoric and Comparative Literature, and is currently working as an English Literature and Rhetoric professor at the University of California Berkeley.

Judith Butler primarily focused on the areas of feminism, political philosophy, and ethics. Butler’s primary argument is that gender is not a given but performativity. In other words, gender is not a fixed intrinsic identity but a result produced by a series of actions and effects. Her performative theory of gender and sex brought colossal impact and influence to cultural theory and gender studies in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Incredibly, her most famous work, “Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity”(1990), became the foundation of queer theory.
